Summer Solstice 2010 at Wisteria ...
Sensei, Bhikkhuni KC Madika has been invited to participate in the events being offered this coming June at Wisteria, a local intentional community. This will be a week long gathering celebrating eco-spiritual culture. You might like to join us. She will guide Qi Gong and meditation daily as well as offer Dhamma talks and a workshop on Taming Destructive Emotions. Visit www.wisteria.org for more information.
Awakening Stillness QiGong...
is the style of QiGong developed by Sensei after finding that it was much easier for beginners to pick up and benefit from than TaiChi. "Awakening Stillness QiGong is an energy moving meditation related to the martial arts which has no element of competition or strife. For this reason there is unlimited benefit to the practitioner and all beings. Wellness, balance, concentration and positivity are all increased. Sensei offers teaching in this profound tool for free at the Athens Public Library, on Wednesday afternoons, from 3:00 - 4:00 PM and on Sunday afternoons at UCM on North College Street in Athens from 3:15 - 4:00 PM.
What's New:
Seeking Monastic Steward ...
for the time when Sensei and Dhammatara are away.
This is a great opportunity for someone seeking solitude and simplicity, it is a beautiful location, companion animals are negotiable. High ceilings bring in lots of light, sun and kero or wood keep temperatures in the 60s easily.
Preference is given to someone seeking spiritual development who will abide by the temporary vows taken by retreatants:
1. Respecting life, I vow to avoid killing living things, and avoid harming anyone including myself through deed, word or thought.
2. Mindful of the needs of others, I vow to avoid taking what is not given, to avoid using what is not offered, to be careful of tools and frugal with supplies.
3. Recognizing that sensual desire fosters selfishness which obstructs discernment, and leads to vexation for others, and myself, I vow to avoid sexual misconduct, to practice chastity in body and mind while at the Hermitage.
4. Realizing self discipline begins here I vow to avoid false speech, malicious speech, harsh speech, idle chatter and gossip.
5. Respecting the clarity of mindful attention that is demanded to practice I vow to avoid intoxicants and other unwholesome substances for body and mind especially alcohol, drugs, tobacco, pornography and violence.
Conditions are primitive, heating with wood or kerosene, water is drawn from a cistern or brought from town, there is minimal electricity for lights, small refridgerator, and hot plate. A winter storm can make the roads impassable for 2-3 days. A monthly donation is requested to cover maintenance. The hermitage will be available October, 2010 thru mid April, 2011. Longer or shorter stays are negotiable.
New Resident at Great Determination...
the great Bodhisattva dog Isis passed on this winter and is followed in turn by Hiro, an eight week old black and white border collie mix from the animal shelter, she is bountiful in practice and lessons for her human friends.
This Summer At Great Determination...
There are several projects planned for outdoor living space to provide community gathering and meditation retreat locations. The Hermitage has to have areas for private and community space to foster individual and interpersonal awareness and healthy habits.
We imagine it will take all summer but in the end be a much more polished and comfortable setting. It will be fun too, basic carpentry and plain old labor. If you would like to pitch in and be a part of the greater buddhist community and a unique offering in southeast Ohio, give us a call at 740-591-2778.
Starting This October...
Sensei and Samaneri Dhammatara are going to Dhamma Dena. The Hermitage will be watched over by freinds and hopefully a Monastic Steward will be found to spend time in practice here. This will begin the rotation between dedicated practice locations for lay and ordained Buddhists. Transition to different locations refreshes and invigorates the practice, stirs the pot so to speak. See the ad for Monastic Steward below.
